melody composer Magee points out, however, that it was during this period that Henderson actually perfected the swing arrangement style he later employed to help Benny Goodman and his band become a musical phenomenon. But this was a different Henderson, one with less drive and seemingly more disorganized. His arrangements became more like structured improvisations, where he would provide the basic outline and the musicians would imprint their parts onto the arrangement, something Dickey Wells labeled "playing in the mud" (171). Henderson's band broke up in late 1934 after recording some of his best arrangements for Decca Records, and it was at this point that John Hammond helped get Henderson to arrange popular songs for the emerging Benny Goodman and his Let's Dance radio program. Henderson seemed to thrive on this activity and his arrangements proved popular for Goodman over the next few years. These arrangements became the standards of the swing style--block voicing, dividing and playing the brass and reed sections against one another, using riffs to accentuate melody, and something Magee calls "chain of syncopation" (195). These features are especially pronounced on Henderson's arrangements of "Blue Skies" and "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. " Henderson used this new-found success to record his own hit song, "Christopher Columbus," in 1936, but the popularity of his formula, sampled by many other swing bands, meant his influence diminished.
