Raus is not content merely to describe what happened, but also offers insightful and persuasive explanations of why things happened the way they did. And he does so in a way that effectively illuminates the relationship between the soldiers and the society they served, a presentation that will appeal to historians and general readers alike. The text is supported by maps of exceptional quality--although some readers may wish there were a few more. Of particular interest is Raus's account of the Cortlanders' experiences in the environs of Fredericksburg during the spring of 1862.
